ARE HARD HAT STICKERS ALLOWED?

The short answer is yes!

In fact both regulatory boards on either side of the border in Canada and the USA agree that hard hat stickers are ok as long as some basic safety requirements are met.

ISHA says:

“Stickers must be compatible with the surface material, not adversely affect the material and not interfere with the ability to inspect the hard hat for defects. Place them at least 13 mm (1/2 inch) above the edge of the brim.”

OSHA says something similar in that it’s acceptable to place adhesive stickers on a hard hat if the manufacturer allows the alteration or an employer can effectively show the reliability of the hard hat is not impacted by the stickers paint or adhesive.

HOW TO APPLY HARD HAT STICKERS

Other than making sure you don’t place the sticker too close to the brim of the hard hat, there are some other tips and tricks you should keep in mind:

1. Clean the hard hat to remove any oil, dirt and debris that would interfere with adhesion
2. Let it dry completely
3. Tac the sticker (or decal) to the hard hat starting in the center of the sticker first
4. Use thumbs to push out from the center until all sides of the sticker are secured

This helps ensure no ripples or wrinkles in the sticker and makes for a strong long lasting hold!
