HOW TO REMOVE STICKERS FROM GLASS
Custom stickers are popular because of their ability to stick to almost anything combined with their long lasting durability.
However, these strengths can become too much of a good thing in certain situations.
What happens when you need to remove a vinyl sticker that’s still holding on strong or when you accidentally place a sticker in the wrong spot?
This is often the case when it comes to glass surfaces like windows and jars.
Read our recommendations below on how best to remove vinyl stickers from glass.
(NOTE: we are not scientists and urge you to seek a second opinion on the safe removal of stickers, especially if they’re stuck on a valuable or vulnerable item or in a public place.)
REMOVE STICKERS FROM GLASS IN 3 STEPS
Whether it’s a sticker placed by a manufacturer or retailer of a glass product or one you’ve stuck on yourself, the task of removing stickers from glass is rarely pleasant but hopefully this advice helps make it easier for you.
1\ Soak it.
Don’t just go picking at it right away, first you should soak the sticker for a few minutes to help soften up and dissolve the vinyl and adhesive.
Some options you can try using, in no particular order:
- Window cleaner (i.e. Windex)
- Hot soapy water
- Rubbing alcohol
- Nail polish remover
- Cooking oil
- Vinegar
If you’re trying to remove a sticker from a smaller item like eyewear, a drinking glass or jar, it’s best to soak by submerging it right in the liquid for maximum coverage and effectiveness.
If the sticker is on a larger object like a car or home window, spraying it or dabbing it with a cotton ball using the liquid you have available will be your best option.
2\ Peel it
After your sticker has been soaked, now is the time to start peeling.
Be aware that in some cases even using the ideal liquid with a long soaking duration may not be enough to make this step easy, just easier.
If you feel comfortable doing so, use a razor blade at a 45 degree angle to help lift the sticker away from the glass.
The trick here, whether you’re using a blade or your fingernails, will be to go slow and work your way back and forth.
It might not be a perfect 100% removal success but not to worry, that’s what the next step is for.
3\ Rub it
If all went well so far you should now only have some stubborn left over sticker adhesive to deal with.
If you were able to get the majority of it off in step #2, you’ll want to use a product like Goo Gone or WD40 to help finish the job.
Apply whichever product you have to the area where some adhesive remains and wait a few minutes.
You SHOULD now be able to wipe the residue off with a wet rag and perhaps a little more elbow grease.
With the right know how and a little patience, there’s a good chance you can avoid leaving any trace of the sticker behind for a satisfyingly squeaky clean glass surface.
